Osteopathy was founded by the American doctor Andrew Taylor Still in 1874.
Dr Still was the first physician to realise fully the profound relationship between the structural balance and integrity of the body and the way in which it functions.
Osteopathic health care is about restoring motion and balance in the body.
When motion and balance within the body are lost, and there are many reasons why that might happen, we may end up with pain and dysfunction. Consequently, as movement and balance is restored, a lot of the pain and dysfunction that we experience will be relieved.
Osteopathy is a manual method, which means that I use my hands both to investigate the underlying cause of pain and dysfunction and to carry out treatment.
The methods I use are safe and natural, like; gentle release techniques, muscle and connective tissue stretching, rhythmic joint movements and high velocity thrust techniques or the gentle but effective cranial approach.
What does the Osteopath treat ?
As Osteopathy aims to treat the whole body, there are an endless number of conditions that would benefit from this treatment. A few of the more common are:
• Backpain and sciatica
• Headache, migraine and sinusitis
• Neck and shoulder pain
• Persistent ache and pain anywhere in the body
• Arthritic pain and stiffness
• Tension, stress and anxiety
• Tiredness and fatigue
• & much more…
Most people come to see me for Osteopathic treatment because they have aches or pains somewhere in the body, most often in the lower back. More recent problems will usually respond quicker to treatment, while longstanding problems of a more chronic nature often need more time.
Many people also come for preventative reasons, they simply want to give their body some care and attention in the form of Osteopathic treatment, in order to stay healthy.
Who will benefit ?
Due to the wide variety of approaches, osteopathic treatment has a lot to offer people from all walks of life and at every age, from babies and children through to the elderly.
