Cranial Osteopathy was founded by the American Osteopath William Garner Sutherland, who was one of the early students of Andrew Taylor Still. W.G Sutherland was one day standing looking at a dis-articulated scull/cranium. As he stood there and watched he looked at the bones on the side of the scull and had a thought that said “Like the gills of a fish, designed for breathing”. That thought was the beginning of a life long exploration into what now is called “The cranial mechanism”, or “The primary respiratory mechanism”.

As a therapeutic approach, Cranial osteopathy is a particular and very gentle way of restoring motion and balance in the body. It is done by co-operating with a natural rhythmic movement, which is present throughout the body and over which we have no control.

By cooperating with this inherent rhythmical motion it is possible to help the body to release very deep seated patterns of tension and imbalance, particularly in the cranium and in and around the central nervous system. This often has a profound effect on a person’s wellbeing, vitality and the body’s capacity for self healing.
